We’re getting to know our new starter, Roger Dean. He’s looking forward to getting stuck in to his new Senior Account Handler role!
Welcome to Romero! First things first, how has your introduction to the business been?
Thanks for the welcome. The introduction to the business could not have been warmer. It was lovely to meet so many of the Head Office team and my colleagues at the Nottingham Office are a great bunch of people.
Can you please tell us a bit about your career to date? Where did you work previously?
It’s been 36 years in broking with differing Commercial/Corporate brokers and insurance placement / management facilities within some larger PLC companies.
I’ve had a wonderful time and have made many great friends, worked hard, laughed far too much and thoroughly enjoyed the last 36 years. I spent 28 years living down south and worked in the London and home counties areas prior to my relocation to the East Midlands eight years ago.
What interested you about working at Romero?
To be honest I was aware of them from market reputation and people in the industry. I had many great years with a large corporate broker that was swallowed up in acquisition some years ago. I was looking for a quality large provincial broker that’s entirely independent, successful, professional and looks after their staff. My answer was Romero Insurance Brokers.
What will your new role involve, and what are you most looking forward to about it?
It’s a Senior Account Handler role. So I’m looking forward to cementing some great long-term relationships with clients, working with quality insurance markets and working with a great team of people across the entire group.
How did you first get involved in the industry?
As a young lad leaving school at 16 years old I lived in Iver Heath in Buckinghamshire. It was very close to Pinewood Studios where many feature films were made,so I wanted to work in special effects. Unfortunately the industry was going through recession at that time. However, a broker had offices there. I was once walking past their office and there was a vacancy sign for a junior, so I took the opportunity and went in. The rest is history!
What advice would you give to someone considering starting a career in insurance broking?
It’s a wonderful career and you truly get out of it what you put in! Push yourself and anything is possible within the industry.
What are your interests outside work?
Spending time with some wonderful friends and family and making memories. You can’t beat walks in the countryside where I live, enjoying great meals out and a good movie.
We’re pretty keen on wellbeing here. What’s your top tip to relax and de-stress after a long day at work?
I unwind in the car and, when I arrive home, have five minutes rough and tumble with my dog. It always tends to do the trick!
