Harry Wood, Romero Insurance Brokers' New Trainee Broker

Working out of the Stockton branch, Harry is our new Trainee Broker at Romero Insurance Brokers.

After previously completing his insurance apprenticeship, he will now be working and learning under our experienced Account Handlers and Brokers. Harry shows brilliant potential and professionalism at such a young age and is a trusted member of the Stockton team. We are excited to see Harry’s progress over the next few years.

We sat down with Harry to ask him how he started his insurance career and how he’s finding the Romero Group offices.

How long have you been working at Romero Insurance Brokers?

I’ve been working here for two months now.

I first started at a well-known broker previously as an apprentice. I completed my CERT CII and moved to an insurer, working in the Private Lines Insurance division – I just didn’t like it there, it was so vanilla, nothing like it is here. So I went to work for the Department of Work and Pensions, responsible for the allocation of job seekers and disability benefits.

And now I find myself at Romero Insurance Brokers as a Trainee Broker.

How did you start your journey in insurance?

It was quite bizarre actually. I was meant to be starting my A-levels, when someone rang me for an interview at a well-known national brokers for an apprenticeship. I told my Dad who recommended I go see what it’s about. I had my interview, came out, and got the job the same day. And suddenly I had a job in insurance, but didn’t have a clue what insurance was.

I chose to pursue this instead of doing A-levels – I was 16, I didn’t even know what car insurance was! I didn’t even know what insurance covered or specifically what it does! Initially it was quite hard, but once you understand the basics, it’s quite easy.

How important is a healthy social workplace environment?

It’s very important. You want to go to your job, be happy, and have a laugh with your work colleagues.

At Romero, I’m happy to be here. The social aspect is really good. I’ve my workmates backing me up all the time, chatting, having conversations, regular nights out. We’ve just been to the Summer BBQ, it was a good way to enjoy with everyone.

I’m looking forward to the Christmas party, just to meet up with all the work colleagues from the different offices and get to know everyone.

What does your 9-5 working day look like?

It can look different everyday. Some days it’s nice and chilled. Some days can be stressful but that’s pretty good because I like being on my toes. Each day is different.

What would you say to someone who’s just started out or has never been in the Romero Group offices?

Honestly, give it some time – it’ll be the best decision ever. With any job it takes time to get used to the new processes and systems. But once you’ve got used to it, you are just flying and it’s amazing; everyone is supportive.

Where do you hope to be in 5 years time?

In 5 years time I’d like to be trained as a broker – I’m training as one now and I’d hope in five years I’d be fully qualified by then. And ideally I’d like to continue my career, becoming an integral part of the Romero Group.

Do you prefer to be busy or do you prefer an empty planner?

Busy definitely. I hate having nothing in my plans.

Do you have any hobbies?

I go out with my mates a lot, for drinks and food. I also watch Netflix as everyone does. I’m currently making my way through Young Sheldon.

An album or artist you know too much about?

Lady Gaga or Katy Perry. I could name most of Lady Gaga’s songs in five minutes I reckon.

If you could give a 40-minute presentation on something with absolutely no preparation, what would it be?

If I had to give a 40-minute presentation on something it would probably be the life cycle of stars and planets. I’m into my astronomy. It’s a bit bizarre and odd, but that’s me.

Are you a member of any clubs?

I don’t think so, and I’m not really a football person either.

Do you cook?

Yeah I can but to be honest I prefer a good takeaway.

How has working at Romero changed your impression of what work is?

Instead of Monday morning, waking up, dreading going to work; I’m actually happy going to work. I enjoy it and come 5 o’clock, there’s no stress, none at all.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could take one book, one luxury and one song, what would they be?

My luxury item would be my phone as long as there’s signal.

My book would be something nerdy.

And my song would be Perfect Illusion by Lady Gaga.
