Helen Rollason Award Winner, Rob Burrow
Rob Burrow accepted the Helen Rollason award at the Sports Personality of the Year awards show this year. Rob was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2019 just two years after his 17 year-long Rugby League career.
Rob has dedicated his recent life to raising awareness of MND, being awarded an MBE and continuing with relentless fundraising. Rob dedicated his SPOTY award to “the MND warriors” and to the late Doddie Weir, a sportsman who won the Helen Rollason award before.
Kevin SInfield was also awarded
Kevin Sinfield, Romero ambassador and friend, stood on the stage with Rob’s family, presented the award, and also accepted a surprise award himself. Since Burrow’s diagnosis, Kevin has raised more than £7 million for charity, and Romero Insurance Brokers and Club Insure have been supporting him every step of the way. In November he ran seven ultra marathons in seven days, a staggering feat where he smashed his £777,777 target to now (at the time of writing) £2.3 million.
Kevin Sinfield has previously attended Sports Personality of the Year, as in 2015 he was nominated, coming second to winner Andy Murray. Visibly shook on the stage, to an audience of thousands on BBC One, Kevin said: “MND isn’t incurable, it’s just under-funded.” A powerful message. He also said “We’ve got to keep fighting. We will keep banging the drum.”
